Theory and Practice Informing Each Other
CRP's approach to community outreach is unusual among planning departments in the United States and within Cornell. CRP has evolved a form of planning and outreach in which theory and practice inform each other. The outreach work of faculty is rooted in their theoretical work and contributes to it.
Outreach planning is an integral aspect of our curriculum. The workshop requirement in our professional degree programs gives students opportunities to speak in public policy arenas and to learn to use visual materials in making presentations. Workshop courses are organized around the policy objectives of "real world" clients -- a local community planning board, workforce or economic development organization, an international non-governmental organization. The workshops typically culminate in multi-media presentations to the client.
